The Phoenix Mars Lander has found evidence of ice just below the Martian surface. In the animation (click for more info), you can see several chunks of bright material disappearing and reappearing in the bottom left corner of the trench. These ice chunks evaporated after the excavator arm uncovered them. They initially thought those chunks might be salt, but after waiting a day and seeing them disappear, they concluded that it was ice. The Lander also found a hard layer in another trench at a similar depth, which possibly could mean an ice layer just a few inches below the Martian Surface. Cool science!
